NIH Catalyze Funding Opens Another 2027 Window for Validated Biomedical Platforms

2026-10-22 · Source date: 2025-03-31 updated notice; reviewed 2026-10-22

Researchers developing enabling technologies for heart, lung, blood and sleep disorders have another potential application window under the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Catalyze programme. The active funding notice, RFA-HL-26-016, lists February 11, 2027 as the next scheduled due date after its October 21, 2026 deadline.

This is not a newly launched grant competition. The notice predates the current editorial cycle and was updated on March 31, 2025; its present relevance is the transition from a just-closed submission date to a future opportunity. The R33 mechanism is intended for enabling technologies or transformative platforms that have already overcome major feasibility barriers and possess supportive preliminary data.

The notice specifically seeks technologies that could accelerate predictive, diagnostic or therapeutic development related to heart, lung, blood and sleep disorders. A project that simply applies an existing tool to a different disease question may not meet the programme's emphasis on technological novelty. Applicants must also observe the announcement's restriction on clinical trials and any requirements specific to the funding mechanism.

For molecular diagnostics and bioinformatics groups, possible areas of interest could include genuinely new analytical platforms, validation methods or integrated technologies with a credible path toward broader adoption. These examples are editorial interpretations, not assurances of eligibility. The strongest applications will need to explain the unmet technical need, provide preliminary performance evidence and show how the proposed work reduces the remaining development risks.

NIH application dates, eligibility and award conditions can change through later notices. Organizations should check the controlling announcement and linked amendments before planning a submission. Because the October deadline has already passed, Alligen does not present it as an open application window. The actionable date for prospective applicants is February 11, 2027, subject to confirmation in the official notice.
